近畿大学大学院農学研究科（奈良県奈良市）水産学専攻博士前期課程2年 成田一平（研究当時）、角田恭平（研究当時）、同博士後期課程3年 髙作圭汰、同博士後期課程1年 香田万里、同博士前期課程1年 武廣陽斗、滋賀県水産課（滋賀県大津市）石崎大介、京都大学フィールド科学教育研究センター（京都府舞鶴市）准教授 甲斐嘉晃、東北大学大学院農学研究科（宮城県仙台市）教授 池田実、近畿大学農学部（奈良県奈良市）教授 亀甲武志らの研究グループは、琵琶湖のワカサギの産卵時期が約25年前と比較して1～2カ月ほど早期化していることを科学的に明らかにしました。
産卵時期が早期化した要因として、「早期産卵の性質を有する個体の割合増加」「琵琶湖の冬季の水温上昇に対する環境適応」「産卵を促す河川水温の低下時期の早期化」の3点の可能性が考えられました。このような産卵時期の変化は、今後、全国各地の湖沼でも生じる可能性があります。本研究は、ワカサギの資源変動を予測し、適切な資源管理を考える上で重要な科学的知見であり、今後の全国的な湖沼調査の基礎となることが期待されます。

"We have often heard from fishermen in Lake Biwa that the time when smelt have eggs and the time when they go upstream to spawn in rivers is earlier than in the past."This on-the-ground information suggests that the spawning season of smelt in Lake Biwa may be moving earlier. However, since no research has been conducted on the spawning of smelt in Lake Biwa since 1997, in 2020 we started a spawning survey with the students. We were able to confirm that the spawning season of Japanese smelt is earlier than in the past.We also found that smelt are spawning on the shores of Lake Biwa at almost the same time as in the rivers that flow into it.This is the first report in the world to demonstrate that the spawning season of smelt is earlier. It is predicted that the spawning season of smelt will change further in the future as global warming progresses, so the results of this study will provide important basic information for understanding and predicting changes in the spawning season and stock fluctuations of smelt in lakes and marshes across the country.''
