Kazuko Hase, a researcher at the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, has researched the Azuma toad (Bufo formosus) tadpoles were used to investigate the effects of early social experience and water environment on sociability. Although many animals are known to have the ability to distinguish between relatives, it was not fully understood how early social experiences affect the way they interact with their peers. In this study, we conducted behavioral experiments combining conditions in which tadpoles were raised in groups, conditions in which they were raised alone, and different conditions in the water environment. As a result, although no behavior in favoring siblings was observed, it was found that individuals raised alone were less likely to approach other individuals, whether siblings or strangers, and remained in neutral locations for longer periods of time. On the other hand, no effects due to differences in water environment were observed. These results indicate that the sociality of toad larvae is shaped more by early social experiences than by kinship. This research not only provides clues to understanding how animal sociality develops, but is also expected to lead to applications in the behavioral development of living organisms and conservation ecology. 兄弟同士で育てた「集団飼育」と単独で育てた「単独飼育」のグループを用意し、同種他個体に対する社会的選好性の選択テストを行った。水槽の量は死にポリエチレンネットで区画を作り、兄弟個体と非兄弟個体それぞれ10個体を刺激個体として配置した。選択テストでは、水槽の中央に試験個体を配置し、60分間動きを追跡。「兄弟側」と「非兄弟側」、さらに中央に「中立ゾーン」の区画を設け、それぞれ滞在時間を比較した。解析の結果、「単独飼育」グループの個体で「中立ゾーン」により長く滞在する傾向を示した。(作成・撮影:長谷和子)

``Sociality is not only limited to humans, but various types of sociality can be observed in the world of wild animals.I'm sure many of you have seen a group of black tadpoles.Those tiny tadpoles also recognize their friends based on a variety of information.We tend to focus on ``innate abilities,'' but in this research, we We also found that early life experiences influence the way children interact with their peers later in life. Although this study is about small tadpoles, I hope that it will help us understand the mechanism that ``sociality is developed through experience.'' I would be happy if the results of this study could serve as a message from tadpoles and give us an opportunity to think about the sociality of animals, including humans.
