  • Ultra-high-precision high-temperature, high-pressure experiments have revealed that Dave Maoite, one of the major minerals found deep in the earth, takes in far less water than previously assumed.
  • Dave Maoite, which had been thought to have the potential to carry water in the lower mantle, was found to actually exist in an almost dry state.
  • This discovery presented a new picture in which deep water is primarily concentrated in subducted crustal material.

overview

Researcher's comments

"This result was achieved by a domestic research group maximizing the fusion of synchrotron radiation and multi-anvil press technology, which Japan has led the world in. Multi-anvil experiments have evolved into a powerful method that allows us to reproduce the depths of the Earth directly in the laboratory. We would like to pass on this knowledge and skills to the next generation and create an environment where students and young researchers can feel that they too want to tackle the mysteries of the earth with multi-anvils.If you are interested, please join us in our research.''
