Teun Munnik appointed Professor of Plant Cell Biology

Dr. Teun Munnik has been appointed Professor of Plant Cell Biology at the University of Amsterdam. Munnik is affiliated with the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) at the Faculty of Science. The appointment came into effect on 1 January 2026. As professor, Munnik will further strengthen research and education in molecular cell biology within the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences.

How do cells know when to switch on Wnt4?

Researchers at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) of the Faculty of Science have uncovered how mammary-gland cells decide when to activate Wnt4, a gene with a central role in mammary-gland development. Their findings reveal how distant stretches of non-coding DNA work together in three dimensions to control gene activity.

Printing with ice

Physicists from the University of Amsterdam have developed a method to print three-dimensional structures in ice. Last December, the work gathered a lot of attention when the researchers 3D-printed a Christmas tree. In the scientific publication that came out this week, the researchers also show how small pillars can be printed under an angle, making it possible to print arbitrary profiles in ice that don’t need any additional support.

ERC Starting Grant for research into platform geopolitics

The expansion of digital platforms into ever more economic sectors and social domains has concentrated enormous economic and political power in a handful of US- and China-based firms such as Amazon, Google and Huawei. This new form of winner-takes-all competition has weakened regulation and political authority within states, fuelling geopolitical tensions. Valentina Carraro of the University of Amsterdam has received an ERC Starting Grant to investigate this new geopolitical reality.

An atom’s interaction with light is not where it is supposed to be

Physicists from the University of Amsterdam have teamed up with colleagues from Zürich to experimentally verify a curious phenomenon that had already been predicted by theory: an atomic-scale effect similar to how a football curves when kicked with spin.
