The Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the University of Montreal has just launched the very first Chair of Excellence in Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
At a time when anti-gender, anti-trans and anti-migration discourses are gaining visibility in several countries, including in states where the rights of the LGBTQI+ communities seemed to have been acquired, this new chair aims to create a place of research with a view to linking these issues rather than treating them separately.
“These discourses are often linked together. The same actors and the same ideological considerations frequently fuel attacks against migrants and against sexual and gender minorities. Producing rigorous scientific data then becomes a way of constructing counter-narratives based on research rather than ideology,” estimates Ahmed Hamila, professor in the Department of Sociology at UdeM and holder of the Chair.
